But it made him wonder again if Tanner’s family knew. None of them had sought him out before the service began, and he was grateful for it. But every so often when the woman reading lifted her head to the audience, she seemed to be searching specifically for him. Aiden kept looking away before she caught his eyes.

He wondered how many people in the audience might be aware of Tanner’s plans; how many supported them. It could’ve been everyone except for him and Cassandra, sitting surrounded like rabbits among wolves.

Aiden couldn’t afford to think like that, he knew. If he started seeing Dark Things behind every pair of eyes he’d lose what was left of his mind.

Down on the stage, Tanner’s sister recited something Aiden was too preoccupied to hear, but made Cassandra gulp a shaky laugh and hold his hand a bit more tightly. That was fine; it distracted him a bit from the hazy discomfort he was feeling.
