In high school, Daniel met Liam before Jasper did.
He’d never felt pure, unreasonable hatred before. He couldn’t justify it either. Their clubs were in the same gym, just one room apart. Dancing and gymnastics were also similar. One of them practiced the footwork, the other worked on the grip, but ultimately both sports were aimed at precision, hard work, and being in tune with one’s body. Despite similarities, Daniel couldn’t push through his dislike for the other boy. He tried not to show it directly, but he knew his facial expressions betrayed him. He didn’t immediately smile when Liam looked at him with a welcoming expression; instead, he’d force his face into a grimace that he hoped resembled a friendly expression. Spoiler alert: it didn’t.
He flooded Jasper with commentaries about the other guy, pouring all his venom and frustration. He remembered the way Jasper looked at him with soft eyes, the way he hugged him tightly, almost playfully.
