Chapter 17

“Go on. You’re doing great.”

Tears rose in her eyes, but she blinked them away and nodded at Thaddeus. “Right. Every time I came to see him, Varg was there. I don’t know if he quit his job or what, but Eli has always worked from home since he can’t be around too many people at once, and every time I dropped by, he was there. Eli grew thinner and thinner, and jumpier and jumpier. Varg never allowed me to come inside, and he never left us alone to talk, though I now know he could’ve listened from the next room if he’d wanted to know what we talked about, but he stood there looming over Eli.”

“To intimidate him.” Sandy looked grim. “This Varg is probably not an alpha. Perhaps a semi-dominant wolf who needed to push someone down to make himself appear stronger.”

“Or nothing more than an abusive asshole.” Thaddeus sent a blue beam of power into Sandy, and he grew sharper again. “I bet there are abusive assholes in every species.”
