Chapter 6

The skillet sizzled as slabs of butter melted against its chrome base. Soon, a glob of uncooked pancake batter poured into a lopsided circle, accompanied by chocolate chips and slices of fruit. It bubbled, releasing a sweet, wholesome smell that spread through the house. While Ethan cooked, Finn grabbed a couple of plates and set the table. Oscar, by now, had loafed himself where he sat on the kitchen island, sniffing at the opened bag of flour.

“Oh, do you have any plans tomorrow?” Ethan asked, flipping the pancake. “For lunch, anyway?”

“Um…” Finn grabbed a couple of glasses and set them on the counter. Oscar immediately pawed at the glass bottoms, but Finn stopped him before they were pushed off the edge. “I don’t think so. Why? Are we doing something?”

“My uncle invited us out.” Ethan flattened the pancake with his spatula. “He wants to meet you.”

“Oh!” Finn brightened. “Is this the uncle you worked for? The one with the theater?”
