Chapter 10

Now, what should he make for himself? Booksy’s food was so much easier to fix.

He stared at the contents of his refrigerator. He needed to shop. Perhaps he should go early tomorrow morning. He hated shopping…or not shopping, but he hated crowded stores. If he went early in the morning, especially on a Sunday morning, there were usually fewer people there.

He turned on the oven and prepared two large potatoes. With a frown, he grabbed a third. Eating baked potatoes three days in a row would be boring, but he could always make some other topping to take to work on Monday. Booksy would be pleased if he made some tuna mayo filling.

He wrote tuna on the shopping list—he’d never neglect to buy tuna for Booksy—and diced bell peppers before rinsing black beans to make the filling his mother always had when he was a kid.

When his phone showed a notification, he almost dropped the sieve with the beans. Phoenix had messaged. Drying his hands, he reached for the phone.
