Chapter 17

He put away the phone just as Logan parked outside the library. Carrying the paint buckets inside, Nix didn’t spot Jules anywhere. Jenny was there, though.

“Hi, where did Jules go?”

She put a stack of books on a cart and sighed. “With the children.” She pointed at a glass wall in the corner. Nix spotted Jules right away. He was holding up a book, smiling at a little girl who was pointing at something on the page. His short hair was disheveled as if he’d run his fingers through it too many times, his shirt was a little rumpled, and he kept pushing his glasses into place.

“He does that a lot? Read with children?”

Jenny blew a lock of hair from her face. “Yeah, it’s his job. He’s the one manning the children’s section.”

“So he doesn’t work with adults?”

“Nope. He loves kids, but hates people.” She laughed, and Nix watched her with a smile. So it wasn’t Jules’ job to get grownups to read.
