Chapter 21

“Quick, make a wish.”

Meredith laughed. “That’s appropriate, considering our theme.”

Jen looked at her watch. “Right on schedule. I planned it just for you, you know.”

They strolled around the grounds, talking and laughing, stopping briefly so Jen could throw a pie at the hapless teacher who was completely covered in red goo.

“Sorry, couldn’t resist. I always hated chemistry.”

Jen seemed to know everyone, picking up various small children and giving them piggyback rides. She really was a natural. And Meredith was still overwhelmed by the number of former classmates who made it a point to talk to her and tell her they missed her. She didn’t quite believe them, but she took contact information from a few of them and promised to keep in touch. Apparently others’ perceptions of her back then were quite different from her own.
