Chapter 23

Keeping her head low, she walked down to breakfast with the rest of the tenants. One or two nodded her way, but no one spoke to her. The patrons, she realized, comprised mostly of older, dusty men, only visiting the boarding house as respite from their hard lives. Some were prospectors, like the man who greeted Violet the day before, but most, Violet guessed, were cowboys. Besides herself and the old crone who ran the building, there wasn’t a single woman there.
