Chapter 25

“I think it’s about time we leave, folks.” Her words were quiet, but urgent. Violet chanced a look around Maple. To her horror, she saw Anderson’s deputies walking in their direction. Before Violet could react, she felt a sharp tug on her upper arm. Mei, with astounding strength, managed to pull Violet into the front of Maple’s saddle. Violet barely had time to settle before Mei sent a swift kick into Maple’s ribs. Maple whinnied in response, and galloped away towards the front gates of the town. All around her, Violet heard shouts, but could not make out the words. The other Railwalkers had managed to catch up with Mei on their own horses, with Mei’s black steed led by Linus’s free hand. Violet craned her neck and looked over Mei’s shoulder.
