“I can’t,” she mumbled.
“And why not?” Mei demanded.
Rory, timidly, spoke up. “She dropped everythin’ back in Little Rock,” he said.
“I don’t got a penny to my name,” admitted Violet. “I don’t got food nor clothes, neither. I don’t know where the closest town is, and I got nothin’ to hunt or protect myself with.” She hugged her knees, her head nestling between her arms. “I’ll die on my own.”
The only sound for a while was the crackling of the fire. Off in the distance, Violet picked up the sounds of crickets and other animals. She listened carefully for Mei’s retaliation, but it never came. Instead, she heard a shuffling. When Violet looked up, she saw Mei going through some of the lawmen’s personal effects. Eventually, she found what she was looking for: a clip of bills and a small pistol. She marched over to Violet and threw them at her feet.
“Problem solved,” she said coldly. Violet stared at the two items. “There’s at least ten dollars there. Enough to get you started.”
