Chapter 35

“We wait until it cools in the pot, and we ain’t never gettin’ it out. But, we let it cool in the jar? It gets nice and firm overnight.” When the pot was scraped clean, Violet set the hot jar aside. “And there we go. See? Easy.”

“Oooh.” Rory leaned over the jar and sniffed hard. “It smells so good! I wanna eat some now.”

“I think you should follow Miss Violet’s instruction,” Linus teased. “Don’t want to burn your tongue, do you?”

Rory pouted, but shook his head. He plopped onto his cot, wrapping the provided moth-eaten blanket around his shoulders. “I’m gonna eat that jam every mornin’!” he declared. He licked his lips, already dreaming about the morning. “I’m gonna spread it on my cornbread so it’s aaaall sticky.”

“What happens when you run out of cornbread?” asked Linus.

“Then I’ll just eat it by itself.”

“You will get sick,” Sitting Bear pointed out.
