Violet smiled, and gently pet the horse’s flank. “What’s its name?” she asked.
Linus smiled. “This is Ginger,” he said proudly. “Won her off a drunk Easterner down in Texas. Fella never noticed the ace up my sleeve the whole game.”
Turning, Violet frowned immediately. “You cheated to get her?”
“It’s only cheating if you get caught,” Linus answered casually.
“No,” said Violet. “It’s cheating if you’re cheating.”
Linus’s smile only grew wider. “So you reckon I should just give her back then? After five years?”
Violet opened her mouth, but closed it quickly. With a huff, she turned to Maple and rubbed her neck. “Y’all ain’t got one moral bone in your body.”
“Damn skippy,” Linus replied. “We might be out of work, otherwise.”
