“Fifteen,” said Linus with a nod. “Left home at thirteen, remember?”

“Fifteen!? That’s so young!”

“Younger suffered worse than I,” Linus said. “I couldn’t afford to be no child, bein’ who I was with where I came from.”

Violet rounded to Mei. “And you?”

“And me what?”

“How old were you then?”

“In ‘74?” Mei tapped her chin. “Oh, I reckon I musta been…Sixteen? Seventeen?”

Violet was winded. “All this time I thought y’all were grown. You weren’t much older than me that day! Hell, you ain’t much older than me now!”

“In years, yes,” Linus agreed. “In experience? You’ve got yourself a long road to walk.”
