Chapter 64

One by one, the Railwalkers woke up and began to dress. Violet kept her eyes averted from Mei the entire morning, hoping she was unaware of Violet’s indiscretion. Either to save her the humiliation or for lack of knowing, Mei never mentioned it, and the day began as usual.

As bacon sizzled on the skillet, Violet took a walk around the grounds to stretch her legs (even though she still had no boots to speak of). It was a beautiful, sunny morning. The dreaded coldness from before had washed away, leaving only the warm sun. Violet led Maple a few yards off, letting her graze periodically. The grass was plentiful, and came up to Violet’s knees. She paused to admire the landscape, wondering just how far she was from home.
