“Y’all see that girl?” she asked. The others looked up from their plates. “The girl scrubbin’ the floors. I think she spotted us.”

“Are you sure?” Mei asked.

“Just about.” Violet put down her fork and stood from her stool. “Let me go and see.” She put her hands in her pockets and casually strolled through the rear swinging door. Beyond it was a small room, chock full of dry goods, pots, pans, and scrub brushes. The maid, unaware of Violet’s presence, was quietly muttering to herself with hushed nervousness. Violet cleared her throat.

The maid yelped and whipped around. Her plump face went red, and she clutched her apron to her breast. “O-oh…Are you—Do you need somethin’, miss?”

“Maybe,” said Violet. “I think I need to know what soured your milk, girl.”

“I…I dunno what you mean—”
