Violet stepped forward, a familiar anger boiling within her. “So that’s it? This girl comes to us for help and we won’t even—?”


Mei frowned. “Violet, the last two times we barely escaped with our skins. I ain’t ready to push that luck, I don’t know about you.”


“If it means helpin’ this poor girl, you bet your bottom dollar I am.”


“It is unwise,” said Sitting Bear. “If you are caught, there is no guarantee you will be saved.”


“Did y’all not hear me? Since when are the Railwalkers a buncha yellow-bellied cowards anyway?”


“This ain’t about bein’ yellow,” Mei said, her voice raising in frustration. “It’s about bein’ smart. You think we lasted this long by takin’ every sob story that came our way?”
