“Right…” Violet pointed. “I’d like you to wrap them two up for me, please.”

It was mid-afternoon by the time Violet returned to the boarding house. The sun had only a few hours left in the sky, yet the wind stayed reasonably warm. Passing the stables, she gave Maple a pet and walked inside. Their landlady—Ms. Gina—was behind the counter, balancing her books. She caught sight of Violet and smiled. “Welcome back, Miss Clementine. Got some shopping done?” She gestured to the parcels under Violet’s arm.
“Spent a little more than I was hoping,” Violet admitted, “but they’re for a special occasion.”
“Oh?” Ms. Gina leaned against her counter with delight. “What’s the occasion?” But Violet only smiled, and Ms. Gina giggled. “Alright, a secret it is, then. Your friends are all out back, if you’re looking for them.”
