“We need to go, now!” Taking Mei’s hand with her good grip, she, Mei, and Hearst all flew out of the train car and into the hot air. As they collapsed into heaps on the hard dirt, Violet caught one last glimpse of the train. One second, it was utterly untouched, and the next, it was crammed up against the side of the mountain, and suddenly, engulfed in fire.


A wave of heat to rival the sands of the Sahara spread over Violet, and she was forced back. Her body tumbled like a hot corn kernel, battering her bones until every inch of her was sore and beaten. Finally, she was still, and the world, after moving so fast, slowed to a much deserved halt.
