But Jesse wasn’t like that. They both knew he’d never set foot down that road again. One embarrassment was enough. He couldn’t handle the pain of knocking on a stranger’s front door with a bag of dark roast and being greeted by a blank stare.

Jeanette seemed to pick up on his glum attitude. “It’s alright,” she added hastily. “Maybe you’ll see him around. It’s a small town, after all.”

“Yeah, maybe,” Jesse conceded, though he wasn’t sure if that was good or bad.

After Jesse FaceTimed with the kids for a few minutes, he and Jeanette exchanged goodbyes and hung up. He started the water in the shower and stripped out of his running gear, carefully so as not to strain his sore muscles any further. Steam built up in the small room, and Jesse felt his shoulders relax as the endorphins of the morning drained away
