Chapter 10

Jack cleared his throat and dropped Jesse’s hand to gesture toward the picnic basket. “Okay, um, everything we need is in the basket. So, starting right now, we are officially on a picnic at a scenic location, and we can only use what we brought with us. No going back to the kitchen for mustard, or a different type of chips.”

“What about the bathroom?” Jesse looked pointedly at the ficus, and Jack laughed.

“We can use the bathroom,” he amended. “But don’t get cute or else I might reconsider.”

“I’m always cute,” Jesse shot back.

Jack nodded solemnly. “This is true.”

He pulled the picnic basket closer and threw the lid open with a flourish. “Alright, we’ve got sparkling water, napkins, plastic cups. Potato chips, plain and barbecue flavor. Turkey and brie on sourdough rolls, and chocolate chip cookies. How does that sound.”

“Hmm.” Jesse tapped a finger against his lips in mock consideration. “No salt and vinegar chips?”

“Absolutely not.” Jack shook his head decisively.
