“He said I could come with him,” Jesse admitted eventually. “If we wanted to give this thing a real shot.”

Jeanette nodded slowly. “So, let me get this straight. A super hot actor wanted to whisk you around the world and be real sweet to you, but you’re not into that, so you ended things.”

“Yeah, I guess.”

“And you’re happy with your decision?”

“It was the right thing to do.”

“That’s not what I asked.”

“I willbe happy with it,” Jesse insisted.

“I honestly hope you’re right,” Jeanette said. “I wantyou to be happy, J. You deserve it.”

The echo of Jack’s words in his sister’s voice was startling. Something twinged in Jesse’s gut as he remembered the uncensored pain in Jack’s face right before he turned and walked out the door.

“You said Jack was different,” Jeanette said softly. “Maybe think more about how and why.”
