Chapter 31

They made their way past all of the damaged vehicles, dragging everything they might need with them. Finally the truck was in view, and the car beneath it did in fact have the top completely crushed all the way to the back door. Several firemen were already there trying to cut off the driver’s door—or what was left of it—from the vehicle.

By the time Dominic and his partner finally made it to the truck, the firemen were pulling the door off the car. Dominic braced himself for what they would find inside. The driver was clearly beyond help, his lifeless body twisted grotesquely against the car’s crushed top. On the passenger side, a woman lay on the car’s floor, pinned under the wreckage of the top.

“How are we going to get to her?” one of the firemen asked. “That part of the car is way under the truck’s trailer.”
