“I have to. They need me. Don’t worry. I know how to take care of myself. You’ll stay with Massimo?”
“Yes. I called the bakery, told them I had been exposed, that I would have to quarantine.”
“Yes, you should. Watch his health, and your own, very carefully. He may get sick.”
Sandro nodded. “You know he will be wanting you here with him with his mother gone. He has become very close to you.”
“And I have become very close to him. I guess we will be taking care of him now until we find a relative who can do that. If there is one.”
Dominic sprawled out on the bed next to Massimo, patting him on the leg, and soon fell asleep. Sandro sat down in a chair, staring at the two of them.
“You’d better get through this safe and sound,” he whispered. “There are two of us depending on you now.”
The words were hardly out of his mouth before he fell asleep.
