Chapter 26

Katherine lowered her right arm into the snow. She then drew a circular shape. Although at least she had gloves on, unlike me. “There’s nothing you can do.”

“Are you sure not telling Taylor was the right idea?”

“You know his politics, so he can never be trusted,” Katherine said.

“Okay. I wanted to be sure. Anyway, I can’t force you to stay, but it’d be great if you did.”

She forced a brief smile. “Are you serious?”

Something hooted nearby. We then both turned our heads to locate the sound, only to realize an owl caused the noise.

I took in a deep breath while counting to ten. Knowing what I had to say next was difficult. My current conversation with Katherine was one of those situations when I had to offer hope, no matter how small it was. Doing so was the only thing I could think of to alleviate Katherine’s worries because she needed something positive to focus on. It was what I would’ve wanted if I were her.
