Chapter 63

“It’s fine.” I continued sifting through the grass and dirt. After that, I placed my parents in the spot I dug. I shoveled dirt on them while fighting back tears. Except I failed. My sobbing could probably be heard on the opposite side of the country. Another minute, my parents were now no longer visible—the dirt covered them.

Losing my parents and having to bury them was grim, but I took some small comfort with how they were right next to the maple tree. It was their favorite place to just talk and have a cocktail whenever time and weather permitted.

I had my memories, even though they would make me sadder while everything was still fresh in my mind. The shovel banged against the ground after I dropped it.

“The eulogy was touching,” Taylor said, making eye contact with me.

“I agree,” Raquel said.

Princess Anastasia looked at Raquel, Taylor, and Stefan. “Why don’t you three go inside and warm up some food? I want to talk to Maximillian alone for just a moment.”
