As time went on, tensions between the humans and Monks only increased. A rumor began that the engine failure was caused intentionally by a human and not a faulty power gage as the engineers claimed. Jack thought it was a ludicrous suggestion, but Cillian couldn’t help but wonder if that, too, was perpetrated by Father Whalen somehow.


It was a terrifying thought. If true, Whalen’s murder count was four, not one. Likely because of an infatuation.


And Cillian didn’t even think he was that special. He knew why Jack loved him. They were friends for two years before finally getting together. They met while Jack was studying to be a mechanical engineer. He just so happened to live in the apartment above Cillian’s, and they clicked. Their friendship was the backbone of their relationship. But Father Whalen barely knew Cillian. Sure, they were once friends, too, but it mostly revolved around faith.
