Chapter 69

“There’s no need to restrain the girl,” said Rapunzel. “She’s just a child.”

To everyone’s relief, the lead soldier put away the zip ties. Instead, he placed one hand on Henri’s back. “Follow the others. Go on now.”

Since it was impossible to restrain a Monk and still let it walk, Rapunzel received the same treatment. All of them were led to a large van and ordered to climb inside. Rapunzel went last and took a seat on the floor next to Muhaimin. The authorities closed the door, but the vehicle did not take off right away. It waited for at least half an hour before rolling into motion. It was cramped and uncomfortable, but at least they were together. Jack leaned his head against Cillian’s.

The driver, behind a metal barrier, didn’t say anything to them for the entire ride. They could see nothing but the occasional light from a street lamp through the blacked-out back window. It was about twenty minutes before the van stopped.
