Chapter 78

The door on the back of the ship that Whalen stole had opened. In the middle of Chicago, the military used rockets and high-caliber guns to light up the inside of the vehicle. When the smoke cleared, Whalen stood at the edge of the platform. Cillian watched with everyone else in the viewing room.

Whalen yawned.

Moments later, a second figure joined him. It was Aavani, the scientist who befriended Cillian. She stood naked, just like Whalen. Her face was blank, distant. She didn’t seem to notice or care that the military was reloading.

They wouldn’t get the chance to fire again.

Whalen sprinted at superhuman speed toward the nearest soldier. He broke the man’s neck like it was easy. Shots rang out, but Cillian knew they would be useless. One by one, Whalen killed each combatant before turning his attention to the officers. Aavani didn’t move the entire time. It was as if she couldn’t even see what was happening.
