Chapter 17

“I did not know you survived,” I said.

“Barely. I was with Badger’s family when the Blue Coats cut us down. I grabbed my son and fell on top of him. I shut my eyes and waited for their bullets to kill us, but they walked on by. After they left, there were a few of us still alive. I saw Morning Mist and Dog Fox. We wanted to go south to the winter campgrounds to join the other bands gathering there, but she insisted on taking another direction. I never saw her again.”

“She made her way to the Mead, and later to Stone Knife’s camp. He took her in.”

“I heard that you and Teacher buried them. All of them.”

I nodded. “Yes. It was a day I will never forget.”

Dew Drop shuddered. “It was horrible. I can hardly speak of it yet.”

“Where did you go after the disaster?”
