“Where are my brother and mother?”

“The fort’s doctor is looking after them for us,” I said. “I want you to stay with them until we come back.”

“I’m going with you to find those men.”

“The major is going to see the ambush spot for himself. We’ll not go hunting the killers this day.”

Confusion clouded his face. “What about my mother and brother? We must take care of them. It has to be done right.”

I glanced at James, who was already aboard his large cavalry horse. “It is the family’s responsibility to bury its kin. Normally, the bodies would be mounted on scaffolds until the bones are clean before burying.”
