“You are an unusual Indian,” he said one evening as I was reading the Holy Bible.

“How so?”

“You read and comprehend. You know a lot about many things.”

I chuckled. “I know a little about many things.”

“There were educated Indians back home,” Bella said. “Many of the Cherokee were quite well educated before President Jackson expelled them.”

“That was before your birth.”

“Not all of them left. Some managed to stay behind. I knew a few.”

“I was educated by a friend, a man who was known as a teacher from Fort Ramson to Fort Yanube. His name was Billy Strobaw.”

“I’ve heard of him,” Andre said. “I think we halted at the place where he lived on the way to Yanube City.”
