Percy felt the same sense of stability. He was more settled. His job at Bells’ Road Comprehensive was both different and very similar to Baddersham. The same in that the rules of science and the way he taught it hadn’t much changed. But different in that his classes were larger and the kids were drawn from all over the social spectrum. That feeling of putting a match to a class and lighting up a pupil’s thirst for knowledge was the same though. The kick he got out of it. It was much more the sort of teaching position he’d envisaged when he left university. His parents were coping well by themselves and were happy that he didn’t feel he had to stay close by them instead of pursuing what he’d always spoken about doing.
