Chapter 56

“Thank the good Lord you two come up,” Dusty said. He didn’t look any worse for the wear, but Barnaby had a blood-covered sleeve. He’d been hit in the left shoulder.

“Came to see why you were late. Anybody else hurt?” Matthew asked.

“Nope. Our passengers and me’re all okay. Made as hornets, but okay.”

I inspected the trace horses while Dusty tended to Barnaby. The other animals were agitated, but all seemed unhurt except for the one that was down. “What happened?”

“We was going along just fine when all of a sudden, Big Black stumbled and went over. Seconds later, we heard a gun boom.”

“The man with the Sharps,” Matthew said, earning a questioning look from the driver. “He sent us ducking for cover when we started shooting.”
