He came up to face me, his teeth gleaming in the darkness as he smiled. “Did I do it as good as Timo Bowers?”

“Timo was a thing of my boyhood. That was a thing of my manhood.”

“And Andre Tiller?”

I was truthful. “Andre could have meant something to me if you hadn’t come along. But I hadn’t truly made love to anyone until that day in the glade on the south side of the Yanube. When you warned me what was going to happen, I almost ran away.”

“Do you wish you had?”

“No. I found my man that day. An ozuye, a warrior who knew things and had seen things I never had. You gave me the gift of wisdom about myself along with your seed that day.”
