Will sighed. “Heard all that, did you?”

Rowan nodded.

“Do me a favor and don’t tell Alec. Let him enjoy his birthday as long as he can.”

“Of course.” He took a deep breath, suddenly afraid of the answer to his next question. “Do you want to take his car so you’ve got transportation if you decide to stay in Billings?”

“No. That’ll make Alec ask questions. I haven’t had many chances to do things right by him. I’m not about to fuck this up.”

When he headed upstairs, Rowan passed his father in the hall and quickened his step to avoid confrontation.

“Rowan.”

Gritting his teeth, he paused and glanced back. “Yes, sir?”

Will appeared behind Dad’s shoulder. “Grown man, Graham. Let it go.”

“I’m not talking to you, Will,” Dad said without looking at him.
