No way to wiggle out of it now. Zander was a mage, too.

A quick check through some of the other boxes revealed half of them were filled in the same manner. Nothing linked Zander back to Gilliland, though, prompting him to move on rather than linger. In the nightstand, he found some weird items, including several vials of blood. They weren’t labeled. He’d bet it was the personal aspect Zander used to ignite most of his spells.

He wandered back to the living room to find Rowan and the stranger in the exact same positions, staring each other down. “You’re not going to beat him,” he said as he walked past them for the kitchen. “He’s a hunter by nature. He can wait anything out if he thinks it might be dinner.”

When the man’s eyes widened in alarm, he stifled his snort of laughter. Having a panther as a sidekick could definitely come in handy.
