The two recognized each other, too, at least as fellow familiars if Gilliland didn’t see the Bouchard family resemblance. Gilliland had gone to great lengths to keep the existence of familiars out of Zander’s awareness, presumably to protect his own skin. Alec doubted he’d filled in Mr. Ortiz on them either. He played his cards close to the vest, Gilliland did.

But now, with Rowan bristling in overprotective mode at Alec’s back, he wasn’t sure this was a secret any of them could keep.

Mr. Ortiz saved him from an immediate response. “What did you do?” He stormed past Gilliland to jab a thick finger at Alec. “What game are you playing here?”

“He’s not.” Gilliland’s jaw was so tight, a vein throbbed in his neck. Wouldn’t it be great if he had a stroke here and now and saved us all a lot of trouble?“It was his father.”
