Chapter 20

“Doctor?” The paramedic working with him questioned before another physician from the clinic stepped in to take Nick’s place.

Nick squelched over to the overhang where a group of firefighters and the less injured of the construction crew had gathered. He hovered at the outer fringe. Close enough to overhear without being in the way.

“I’m telling you, it’s too unstable.” The fireman, his bulk accented by his turnout gear, waved his hands in exhausted emphasis.

The conversation grew heated. Nick didn’t understand half the terms flung around. He stared at the rescue efforts, searching for John with dazed insistence.

“You gotta try.”

Nick recognized the voice first. Then the person when Bobby Gonzales ran his forearm over his face, smearing the thick covering of mud and exposing the features hidden beneath.

“Dammit, I know the tolerances. The supports aren’t going to hold much longer. We’ve got to get them out now.”
