Chapter 30

With the remaining injured divvied up between local hospitals, the aid workers had been bused to a nearby school auditorium for a mass debriefing. The deserted work site looked like nothing more than the morning after an outdoor concert. A terrible scene of tragedy reduced to a messy cleanup. Plenty of good men had been injured, but by some miracle no one died here today. Nick still didn’t know how.

Nick sank down beside John. His added weight sending the metal legs of the cot deeper into the saturated ground. Without a word John opened his blanket. Nick moved into the embrace, careful not to jar John’s upper body or his knee.

He groaned, tiredly relishing the way the additional body heat slowed his shivering. Short relief when every other ache and pain screamed for his attention. And yeah, there were a lot of aches and pains.
