Eric had recognized most of the people who’d presented themselves at the door and was able to introduce them to Carlton. Their guests included the entire Board of County Commissioners, as well as the mayors and city council members of Hawthorne and two smaller towns.
After the last introduction had been made, Carlton had leaned close to Eric and said, “Is there anyone in this county whom you don’t know?”
“There are probably a few newcomers to the area I’m not familiar with,” Eric said. “But you don’t live in a small place like this for twenty odd years without getting to know just about everybody. It’s the way small communities operate.”
Later, when the event was well underway, Carlton said, “Do you think anyone would be offended if you and I were to take a turn around the dance floor?”
