Chapter 20

“Twice.” Doreius said. “Don’t forget the siren.”

Her palms were slick with sweat. “A siren appearing in front of me is hardly helpful. If anything, it’s rather frightening.” I don’t believe my father lied to me about my birth, but he always said I had been blessed by a dryad. Could it all be true?“It shouldn’t change anything. I’m not the one with the power, after all. I’m fairly ordinary.”

Doreius snorted. “By Zeir’s beard, you are not ordinary! Have you ever seen a woman sail and raid with men?”

“That’s not because of anything supernatural,” Driada replied. “I joined the crew because I wantedto. Because I believed it was the right path for me.”

“Summoning a god to aid you seems pretty mystical to me,” Doreius said gruffly.

“If it is the god, then asking him to send me a sign should work, shouldn’t it?”

Erjon crossed his thick arms across his chest. “I’m not certain about that, lass. Remember, the god may not always respond to your call.”
