Nevertheless, he shook his head.

“But we’re still friends,” I added.

He nodded. “Best friends.”

“Like, best friends forever?”

“Bestestbest friends forever,” he asserted.

I grinned, feeling better. There was an ache to what I felt, though, a subtle pain that I didn’t think would fade away completely, at least not for a while.16

Easter was upon us, and with it, thawing weather. It had been a long winter, and I think we were all glad to see the wide lawns of the campus again, muddy and brown though they were.

Scott’s moms had invited both of us for Easter weekend, back when we were still going out. They knew we’d broken up, but still insisted I come—I guess I was just that likeable. I backed out as graciously as I could, arguing that—with finals not far away—I really needed a weekend to myself. That, and Scott’s moms were an incredibly intense pair of ladies. Best taken in very short doses.
