Chapter 41

“Jeremy!” Heather shrieked. “You’re not gay, you’re just confused—because of freaks like him.”

“Freaks like me?” I echoed, hands balling into fists. This was going to end badly, I knew. I’d likely end up losing my friends by what I did next, but I was done putting up with her homophobic bullshit.

Before I had a chance to unleash, Jeremy’s arms were around me, drawing me into his shoulder. I resisted for an instant, but the smell of him in my nostrils was intoxicating all over again.

“Don’t. She’s not worth it,” he whispered, his breath tickling my ear. I leaned into him and he squeezed me closer.

“Jeremy?” Heather shrieked again.

I felt him sigh, and his arms slipped away. We both turned to face her. Then his hand slipped into mine, and I grasped it.

“You and me, we’re through, love,” he said, his voice thick, gravelly. He cleared his throat. “We’re done. For good.”
