Chapter 5

What can it be?

I’m eager to yank out the paper inside and read it, but at the same time, the stark white envelope causes a niggle in my stomach. It’s not like I think he’ll break off the engagement via letter while I’m quarantined, but it must be something important. Why else would he feel the need to write to me instead of just telling me on a call or a Skype session?

But instead of opening the envelope, I pick up my phone and dial Elaine, my older sister. She answers after the first ring, as though she’s waiting for me to call.

“Are you all right?”

“I’m fine. No fever today. Don’t worry.”

“Don’t worry? Don’t worry? What am I supposed to do when my brother is infected with a virus that’s killed millions of people?”

“Elaine. Honey.”
