Chapter 30

He could hear voices and laughter everywhere, but not Tom’s.

Tom heard Jason calling, even saw him as he was searching for him between the trees. Why he hid, he didn’t know, except he needed to prove to himself he could keep his distance. He’d almost stayed within reach of Jason all day, and even though it was hard to step away, he had to. His heart was skipping beats when Jason laughed, his gut clenched when he smiled. “Cute, isn’t he?”

Tom jumped as Marge’s voice reached him. The spring sun made her grey hair glisten. “Erm…who?”

Tom sensed disappointment in her eyes. Was she disappointed in him? For spying on Jason?

Monica sighed and reached for his hand. “Come on, let’s go find some eggs and catch Jason before he gets lost in here.”

“He won’t get lost.” Because Tom was keeping an eye on him.
