Unconsciously, Conner scratched at the bandage on his neck and
asked, “So you all want drinks or something?”
“No,” Rand said in his soft, smoked-out
voice. “We came to see you.”
Conner’s heart leaped into his throat. He
couldn’t imagine anyone coming to see him at work, least of all
these three. “Really?”
But Price laughed, shattering the moment.
“He’s just joshing you, kid,” he said, slapping Rand on the
shoulder. He raised his voice and bellowed out, “We came to
eat!”
Conner grinned self-consciously, but Rand
didn’t drop his gaze and there was something in those dark eyes
that suggested he was more serious than his friend believed.
