Chapter 53

“Well what?” Your note said call you and I did,Stacy thought, glancing at the piece of paper once again on the table. I’ve got better things to do than sit here while we ignore each other on the phone.

Slowly, as if he’d already asked and Stacy was just too stupid to remember the question, Lamar wanted to know, “Are you pulling the same shit you did before? Don’t tell me you had detention.”

Though Lamar couldn’t see him, Stacy shook his head. “They don’t do that in this program. We’re adults now.”

“Or supposed to be,” Lamar sniggered.

That comment hurt. “Fuck you. I’m hanging up.”

Lamar stopped him with, “Wait!” but didn’t add anything else, and they sat on the phone again, silent. Stacy knew his friend wanted him to ask why but he’d be damned if he spoke first. Through the phone he could hear someone in the background, cursing loudly, and someone else asked if they could start ‘er up again. Turning away, Lamar growled, “Get off that! I’m on the phone.”
