"Chloe Johnson, you selfish bitch!" Sasha kept cursing outside the door.
But Chloe couldn't care less.
She found the previous bed was replaced with a larger one, big enough for them two.
So Daniel had planned it beforehand. What was he thinking? Being her roomie for a long time?
But... what's bad about it?
Chloe yawned and stretched herself fully. Then she jumped on the soft bed and had a good sleep.
Later, she was woken up by Sasha's shrill voice.
"Daniel! Kick her out!" Sasha shouted, "She dared to take your room! I can't bear it!"
Daniel stunned her with a simple sentence. "I invited her."
"You... what? Are you... " Sasha didn't finish her sentence.
While Daniel sneered, "I'm what? Silly? Sasha, I knew who put the rat. And you should learn enough is enough. I'm too busy recently. Later I will arrange for you to work in my company as an intern."
"That's different. Business is business. I can work in your company. But now Chloe must get out of your room. I hate her."
Sasha was so annoyed that she even forget to fear him.
"Follow me," Daniel walked to the study.
Sasha pouted but did as he said reluctantly.
"Sit." Daniel pointed to the chair opposite to him.
Sasha sat down at once, peeking at him in secret.
"Sasha, I promised to take care of you because I respect your mom who gave me a hand when I was in trouble. But you should know my patience is precious. And it's running out."
Daniel was expressionless. But something in his tone sent a chill on Sasha's spine.
She had never seen Daniel like this before.
"I do believe in a second chance. That's why we are having the conversation now. But, only one chance. Got it?"
"Yes... sorry... " Sasha started to sob slightly.
"Now, you can leave." Daniel rubbed his sore temples.
There came another knock on the door. Chloe was standing outside, examining him.
"Do you think she will change and grow up?" Chloe came in and sat down, "By the way, you looked intimidating."
"Are you scared?" There's something tempting in his voice.
Daniel walked over, trapping Chloe in the chair by putting his hands on the armrests.
They were so close that she could feel his breath brushing her cheek, warm and moist. Heat climbed on her face. And the door was still open.
Uneasy, Chloe tilted her head, looking away.
"It's a little hot here... " Chloe muttered.
Hot? Daniel arched his brow. "The winter is coming soon. And you feel hot? Maybe I can help you... " His gaze moved to her button.
"No need," Chloe stood up suddenly, almost hitting Daniel. Then she fled from his study quickly as a rabbit.
While Daniel still had work to do. It was late at night when he came back to his room.
But as he saw Chloe, her rosy cheeks, he realized he made such a brilliant decision to... share the room with her.
She hadn't changed much in recent years.
He still remembered she used to follow him around in high school.
Back then, he was very popular among girls and got tons of love letters and gifts every day.
But he refused all of them. He didn't want to accept the kindness he couldn't pay back.
Except once.
One day, his friend walked over and put a gift wrapped delicately on his table.
"This gift is from your younger brother," his friend was curious, "How come I don't know you have a younger brother?"
Daniel replied coldly, "I don't. Don't be ridiculous."
His friend snorted with disdain, "Well, open it and see what your younger brother got you."
"You know I don't accept gifts."
"Well, please. For my sake?"
Daniel looked at him suspiciously.
"Sorry, but I owe him once... so please?"
"Fine. But just once."
Daniel put it away right after he took a peek. Well, he was surprised.
"What's that? Can I have a look?"
"No." Daniel rejected him at once.
At that time, he didn't know the so-called younger brother was Chloe. But the gift was still kept safe by him.
He couldn't help smiling as he recalled this episode.
But his smile froze quickly after he noticed that Chloe's cheeks were red in an unhealthy way.
With a frown, he reached out his hand and touched Chloe on her forehead which was hot.
"Chloe, Chloe?" He whispered and patted her shoulder gently.
Unwilling to wake up, Chloe complained in displeasure.
Daniel called her several times but got no response, so he had to give up.
She might have a fever. Daniel remembered that there were some ice packs to keep down a fever. So he sneaked out to fetch some for her.
Feeling the coolness on her forehead, Chloe showed a smile in her sleep.
Seeming to know Daniel was taking care of her, Chloe got closer to him subconsciously, holding his arm tightly.
While Daniel found himself enjoying her touch and trust. He slept beside her and closed his eyes.
Early in the morning, his cell phone buzzed and woke him up.
He took a look in a daze. The next second, he woke up completely.
Nancy sent him a message that Kevin got worse suddenly and he was in severe danger now. So the bone marrow donation should be performed as soon as possible.
And Chloe was the only candidate.
Daniel panicked at once. No... he must protect her.
*****
"Chloe, time to get up." Chloe heard someone was whispering gently in her ear.
As she opened her eyes, she froze, seeing Daniel so close to her.
And he was so handsome.
Daniel hesitated and told her the truth, "Your brother's in danger."
"I'll get up right away."
Chloe immediately got off the bed and rushed to take a shower. While Daniel was waiting for her outside patiently.
Soon, they went to the hospital. But as they got off the car, Chloe suddenly scratched her hair helplessly, "Damn, I forgot my phone."
But Daniel just arched his brow, answering meaningfully, "Never mind."
That's right. Kevin was the priority. She needed to check on him now.
She ran to ICU again, panting heavily. Laura and Ben were waiting anxiously in the corridor.
As Laura saw Chloe, she didn't bother to greet and continued pacing back and forth.
Ben noticed Chloe looked pale and asked, "Chloe, how are you doing recently? You look a little tired."
Chloe gave Ben a hug and smiled, "I'm fine."
Then Ben looked at Daniel with gratitude "Daniel, thank you for taking care of my Chloe. Thank you so much."
Daniel shook his head, "My pleasure."
"I should care more about Chloe. But recently I'm too busy with scientific research. And now Kevin's condition is getting worse. I know everyone is under pressure."
Chloe felt a little sad for both herself and her father. In fact, she felt she was left out by the family. But as Ben said, everyone was under pressure. Maybe she should be more considerate.
"Uncle, can we have a word?" Daniel asked.
Ben glanced at Chloe and patted her on her shoulder before leaving with Daniel to a quieter place.
Chloe looked at them in bewilderment. What secret were they going to share?
Daniel cut to the chase, "Uncle, Chloe had a fever last night. That's why she looks pale now. So I don't think she can donate her bone marrow now. I also know Kevin is in danger. But uncle, we have to wait. I can't let Chloe risk her life."
Ben froze for a moment and nodded, "I know what you mean. Chloe's my daughter. I won't want that either."
But this was putting Kevin in more danger. He could die.
"I have also contacted hospitals all over the world. Luckily, I got another proper candidate. But he's abroad now. It will take some time to persuade him and ask him to come here. But I insist you should consider it seriously. Chloe isn't the proper one to donate, uncle."
Ben raised his voice joyfully, "Good news! Thank you so much. In this way, we can save Kevin without harming Chloe."
Then they walked back to Chloe and Laura.
"Laura, just now Daniel brought good news! There is another candidate proper for Kevin's bone marrow donation. Since Chloe is not feeling well now, we should consider the other one?"
To everyone's shock, Laura snapped, shaking her head heavily.
"No way! That takes too long! Kevin can't wait, even for one more second!"
Ben remained silent, knowing she was right. Anyway, he really respected Laura and barely went against her.
"Chloe, Kevin is your brother! Stop all your excuses now. If anything happens to Kevin because of your selfishness, I'll never forgive you!"
Chloe started at Laura's frosty face and asked the question buried in her heart for long, "Mom, am I your daughter?"
Or why was she being so harsh on her?
Hearing this question, Laura stumbled involuntarily, leaning against the wall to support herself. She had been so tired and worried recently, way too much for her to handle.
But she also cared about Kevin.
"But Kevin is your brother! Are you telling me you'd rather watch him dying than taking some risks of donating your bone marrow?"
Still Kevin... Chloe lowered her head and didn't say anything.
"That's enough!" Ben couldn't bear the argument.
"Aunt, Chloe just had a fever last night. Besides, yesterday she donated her blood if you still remember. So she can't donate her bone marrow now. It's dangerous for her as well." Daniel wrapped Chloe with his arm, trying to give her some warmth.
"Fever?" Laura froze for a moment and blamed, "How can you have a fever at this critical moment? I told you to take good care of yourself."
"Laura, enough! She's our daughter. You can't be so mean!" Ben stepped in and stood by Chloe.
"My daughter? My daughter would never just think about herself! She would never be selfish enough to cancel the engagement party just because she wanted. My daughter would never be cold enough to let her brother die instead of saving him! "
"So it all started with my engagement party, right? Fine. If that's what you want, I can have another one. But why are you being so mean to me recently? I don't understand."
She tried to find the answer to Laura's cold attitude. But she didn't get one. She was puzzled.
"Well, the patient is ready for the surgery now. What's going on here? Who's going to donate?"
Suddenly, the doctors came out of the ICU and asked them with a serious look.
Nancy, who was among them, came forward in surprise, "Chloe, you're here. Don't worry, Dr. Sharp is well-known for bone marrow donation surgery. With him, everything's gonna be fine."
While Ben hesitated, "But Dr. Sharp, my little girl just had a fever last night. Can she donate now?"
"Fever? That won't work. It's dangerous for them both! We can't perform the surgery now."
