"We're not gonna find them, Anna, we're gonna die because of you."

"No, we're gonna die because of you, and your bad attitude."

"It's been three days, they're all dead."

"They're not dead, they're just missing."

"Why don't we just give up? I mean why are we even trying?"

"We're not giving up, Angie. My family's out there and so is yours."

"You don't know that."

"Doesn't mean I can't hope for it."

We had been walking for days, haven't had food in forever, I forgot the last time we slept. Angie was depressed, I was sick of her complaining. I just wanted to find a familiar face, someone who could take over this responsibility, but there hasn't been anyone. Maybe Angie was right, maybe everyone really was dead.

"Did you ever find her?"

"Who are you taking about?"

"The woman you met a long time ago, when your dad took you away. I've heard you talk about her."

"That doesn't matter anymore."

"Don't be ridiculous, I know you care about her, maybe even love her. Look, all I'm saying is that if we find out that everyone really is gone, you may have to change your priorities."

Order. That's all I've ever truly wanted. Law, a way to handle things. It was something Ethan Warren never could handle but he's dead now, he doesn't make the rules.

Over the course of four days I had managed to provide safety for those who escaped the community by my side. Single-handedly I gave us a roof over our heads, hot dinners, and safety as we made an old gun shop our own. Khai said the smell in the air reminded her of the hunting store back in Minnesota, a time I was trying desperately to put behind me.

It was just Khai, Amyas, Piper, I, and Khai's dog who required more than he was worth. Piper wanted to find Angie, Khai wanted to find Evelyn but honestly I couldn't care less what they did. I was going to create a life for Amyas, whether it was here or on the other side of the world. As long as people like Ethan are the ones in charge, everything would finally be okay.
