Chapter 15

Six months later

Jess watched his Dylan play with his brother and sister in the backyard. It had been half a year since the entire thing went down and he was happy that his family had survived.

Aiden had gotten better and was working out more than ever. She had solidified her alliances with ease, especially the one with the Manchestor Brothers. Lin was all too happy to help considering all the things he had been through with his own family. He knew what it truly mean to mourn a lost loved one, and he was ready to protect those with everything he had.

She didn't want her children put in that situation ever again. Clint was around more, not like he wasn't in the beginning. The entire Guard had been modernized and updated. Tyler and Petey had installed a security system that was ten times better. It was more in depth, and now it could sense when someone had contraband on them.

Austin was over his magic poisoning and moving around like he normally did. He was still annoying, complaining mostly that he missed out on some of the most important things. He really wanted to be in the fight, but when he heard of the real reason behind it, he sobered for like thirty seconds. Then he was back to his idiotic tendencies.

He looked over when all the children started laughing. Colby and Colt ran as fast as they could towards the house. They only succeeded in collapsing in the grass in a fit of giggles. Kasta collapsed beside them and rolled as Colt attacked her. He dissolved once again into a laughing fit when she started tickling him.

Jess was really happy when Kasta had decided she wanted to stay with him in New Orleans. He had told her he wasn't going to make her decide right away but she had. She had turned to her father and told him she would be the ambassador to his people. Leothain hadn't been too happy to let his daughter go but he saw the devotion in her eyes. Once again he made Jess promise he would take care of his daughter. Jess did of course and stood with Kasta as they disappeared down the road.

Dylan walked up to him and raised his arms. Jess swung him up and settled him on his hip, watching the twins crawl across the grass to their cousins.

"They seem to be doing really well."

Jess turned to Aiden as she stopped beside him. He kissed the side of her head, making a face when he came away with sweat.

"Cole is still a drill sergeant when it comes to training?" he asked.

Aiden shrugged her shoulders. "It's not that it matters. He's doing what he thinks is best. We don't want a repeat of what happened."

Jess could agree wholeheartedly. He hadn't realized how scared he had been when he thought his family was going to be torn apart. There was no way he could have thought about bringing Kasta into this family if it wasn't stable. Luckily it was and now it was stronger than ever.

Aiden followed his line of sight and sighed. "You've got it bad, brother. You might as well marry her. Mom wants more grandkids."

"Speaking of kids, how's Tyler?"

"He's doing better. He sold his house and has taken in Tallyn's twins. They're four years old and a handful. They're already calling him dad. I don't know how he's taking that but he's doing what he thinks is right. I can't fault him for that."

"Neither can I. He's a good man."

Aiden nodded. She turned around and reached for her son. "Come on, buggy. Let's go get a bath."

"Rubber ducky?" Dylan asked.

"Yes, you'll get your rubber ducky. Then milk then bed. Sound good?" Dylan nodded his head, blond curls bouncing wildly. "Good boy. Now go find Grandma and tell her to run you a bath."

When he was gone, she turned and walked over to the twins. They instantly perked up. Taking great care, she lifted Kielan by his belly and Stormy under her arms. Kielan instinctively put his arms out and began blowing raspberries. He was pretending he was flying. Aiden nodded and walked into the house. She talked to him like he was a grown man all the time, and he just laughed like the infant he was.

"Uncle Jess?" Colby asked as she and brother came over to him. "Do we have to go inside?"

Jess made a grand gesture of looking around. "Is it getting dark?" They nodded. "What are your daddy's rules about playing outside in the dark?"

"Only if there's an adult around."

"I'm going inside. What does that tell you?"

Colt kicked the dirt and hung his head. "All right but can we have cake?"

"That is a question you'll have to ask your grandma."

They ran into the house calling for Kathryn. He knew his mother was going to give them whatever they wanted. Andy would argue with her, but she would always win. Her reasoning was simple: she was their grandmother. She could do what she wanted.

Jess felt Kasta walk up to him. He turned around and smiled when she slipped into his arms. It felt great to have her around. She was everything he wanted in someone. She was warm and happy and willing to accept new surroundings. Aiden made it clear what she expected and she did the best she could.

She pulled away. "What are you thinking?"

He looked down at her. "I'm thinking about how lucky I am. Not many people get to say they are mated to an Elf."

"That's because not many people know about us."

"Exactly."

She crinkled her nose at him. "Jess, do you remember that question you asked me a couple of months ago?"

His eyes brightened. "Yeah?"

"Well, my answer's yes." She laughed when he picked her up and swung her around, listening to him laughing like a maniac.

"You just made my day, Kas."

"Well, you made my life complete so I guess we're even."

Jess smiled, dipped his head and kissed her. His life was as complete as hers and that's how he planned to keep it.
